Photographs exploring mood, irony, wonder,
and the moments that often go unnoticed.
Artist Statement
Susan's images explore mood, irony, wonder, and the moments that often go unnoticed in everyday life.
She is fascinated by what people overlook. Familiar landmarks, fleeting interactions, changing weather, and quiet details hiding in plain sight. Through observation, timing, light, and atmosphere, she looks for the stories and emotions that exist just beyond where most people direct their attention.
Susan is less interested in documenting a place than in revealing how it feels to be there. Her photographs invite viewers to pause, look again, and discover what may have been in front of them all along.
An Evolving Body of Work
Hiding in Plain Sight is a collection in progress. As she photographs, edits and lives with the images, the collection continues to change. Some photographs stay. Others leave. New connections emerge along the way.
The work begins with four questions
I
What have we stopped seeing because it has become familiar?
II
What is happening around us while we are focused elsewhere?
III
How do light, weather, and perspective change our understanding of a place?
IV
What stories, emotions, and connections are hiding in plain sight?
Selected Work
A lone paddleboarder glides across still water, leaving only a gentle wake behind. A quiet journey through light and reflection.
Two kayakers disappear into the fog as the landscape dissolves around them, leaving a quiet sense of mystery.
At first, the barn, mountains, clouds and water fill the frame. Then a small interaction between an adult and child reveals itself, the raised fishing pole turning a quiet landscape into a story.
A child played in the crashing waves when gulls overhead caught his attention, connecting sea and sky in a fleeting moment.
Soft, filtered light gives the scene a painterly quality. Two figures cross the bridge, seemingly unaware of what lies on the other side, while the opening below draws the eye into another world beyond.
A lone figure moves along the jetty, small against the landscape and seemingly unaware of the quiet beauty surrounding him.

On a dark, foggy morning with a storm looming, vibrant laundry blew in the wind between two homes along a busy main road. As people hurried in and out of the nearby drive-in coffee shop, its unexpected burst of color and movement went almost entirely unnoticed.
Instruction & Learning
The Image Lab is a live online monthly coaching program built around image feedback, collaborative coaching, and personalized guidance. Susan created it based on her own needs early in her career, when she wished she'd had a coach to help her understand light, strengthen her compositions, and shorten the learning curve.
As Program Director and Instructor at Seacoast Photography School, she also leads workshops and private instruction.
